Bringing Laughs to 'Mayberry'—and a Roundtable on Women in Comedy

Eagle Rock comedian Bobbie Oliver is set to launch the 3rd Annual Eagle Rock Comedy Festival in December.

When comedian Bobbie Oliver started the 1st Annual Eagle Rock Comedy Festival in 2010, she wanted to bring free comedy to “Mayberry” while boosting local business and helping reinforce what she says everybody already knows—or should: “Eagle Rock is the best place in L.A. for food, fun and culture.”

Two years and thousands of laughs later, Oliver’s labor of love comes with a new twist: Besides the usual 150-plus comedians who will perform in Eagle Rock restaurants, bars and shops along Colorado Boulevard and Eagle Rock Boulevard during the 3rd Annual Eagle Rock Comedy Festival next month, a Women in Comedy Roundtable will feature leading female comedians from all areas of the comedy industry.

Scheduled to kick off on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when the five-day festival will begin, the roundtable is aimed at discussing issues and challenges that women typically face in the male-dominated comedy industry, according to Oliver.

The Women in Comedy Roundtable will be held at 8 p.m. at the American Legion, located at 2109 Merton Ave. Audience members will be encouraged to submit questions that will be discussed during the roundtable. “We expect the Women in Comedy Roundtable to be fun, informative and a great networking opportunity,” said Oliver.

From Thursday, Dec. 6 through Saturday, Dec. 9, the festival will feature live comedy shows at Dave’s Chillin-n-Grillin, Swork, Colombo’s, the Coffee Table Lounge, Corner Pizzeria, Brownstone Pizzeria, The Capri, and the American Legion. In addition, there will be open mics on the Swork patio. On Dec. 9, free comedy workshops are scheduled at the Aikido Cultural Institute, located on 5058 Eagle Rock Blvd., and at Dave’s Chillin-n-Grillin.
