Coyote Sighting on Hill Drive

A daring coyote gets into a staring match with a local resident.

Kaye Beckham, a former president of the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce, was driving to her home on Hill Drive one recent night when she saw what appeared to be a large, brown dog ahead of her.

When she looked closely, Beckham noticed that the animal didn’t have a collar. It wasn’t a dog but a coyote. What was odd was that it was around 7 p.m.—not your typical time of day for a coyote sighting.

“You usually see them early in the morning,” said Beckham, adding that she came across another coyote recently. The coyote, pictured here, was as bold as they come. Beckham’s husband David had to stare the coyote down before it moved out of their path, Beckham said.

“It’s not their fault,” she added. “We took their habitat away by building the 134 freeway and it’s hard for them to find food.”

Correction: This article initially identified Beckham's husband as Jim. The correct name is David—Beckham's first husband, who passed away, was Jim.
