Hailstorm in The 'Hood Startles Residents

The hills toward Eagle Rock's deep south get a half-hour blitz of intermittent hail Sunday.

A hailstorm struck parts of Eagle Rock Sunday evening—to the surprise and delight of Patch reader Jason Pritchett, who grabbed his camera and ran out on the patio of his Upperton Avenue residence to snap these photos.

Pritchett lives at the very top of Upperton, just before the street curves around a hill into a one-lane road that empties out onto Buena Vista Terrace and Nolden Road. (See the attached Google map.)

The hailstorm began just after 5 p.m. and wasn't as sporadic as another spell of hail that hit the neighborhood Friday. In fact, Sunday's storm, which left a snow-like blanket on streets and the tops of cars, lasted off and on for a good half-hour or so, Pritchett tells Patch. “There was a pause for a few minutes, and then it returned even harder for a few more minutes,” he says.
