Last Chance: The Eagle Rock Rock and Eagle Shop Closes June 3

Eagle Rock's—perhaps L.A.'s—most innovative store ever bids the neighborhood farewell Sunday.

Nine weeks after it opened on April 1 as Eagle Rock’s—and possibly the entire world’s—only store to both show and sell artful creations revolving around eagles and rocks, The Eagle Rock Rock and Eagle Shop will be closing its doors.

Those of you who have been to the store on 4765 Eagle Rock Blvd.—or attended its grand opening—would know that the whole affair was no April Fool’s joke. (If anything, it was one of the most elaborate and creative entrepreneurial exercises anyone has likely encountered.) And those who have yet to visit are racing against a Sunday deadline: This is the last week that The Eagle Rock Rock and Eagle Shop will remain open.

The good news: Everyone’s invited to the store’s closing party on Sunday, June 3, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Among the featured events will be musical acts by Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys, The Keith Walsh Experience, and Sea Leg, a newly formed temporary band who are going to sing Eagles songs especially for the closing party. (The name of the band, which is comprised of Antonio Ortiz, Tony Fernandez and Paul Cherwick, is an anagram of the word ‘Eagle.’) Hubby encourages a small purchase from all guests and requests that they bring beverages to help cover the costs.

There will also be on-site screenprinting by Pop-Hop, the newly opened book shop and artists' book-making screen printing establishment in Highland Park. Pop-Hop will be screenprinting the store’s logo onto whatever people bring in, as well as the logos of the performing bands for a few bucks a pop.

All of which begs the question: How did the store fare during its brief, two-month existence, especially given its location in the heart of Eagle Rock?

“Enthusiasm was high from everyone who came in, though sales could have been better!” says store-owner Bettina Hubby, who envisioned the store more as a “show” than as a commercial enterprise. “I am not disappointed since I accomplished what I strived to accomplish—an installation, an exhibition and a shop that brought a lot of joy to a lot of lives.”

Including Hubby’s: Opening The Eagle Rock Rock and Eagle Shop was by far “the best experience thus far for me as an artist.”

The pop-up store’s June 3 closure is all according to plan and has nothing to do with the vagaries of L.A.’s commercial market. In fact, every item that is unsold will still be available for purchase over Ebay after June 3. Stay tuned for details.
