Crime & Safety

Making Yosemite Drive Safer

Better lighting would certainly help—but how about random Neighborhood Watch patrols as well?

The reported sexual assault on a female Occidental College student on Yosemite Drive on the night of Friday, Sept. 10, elicited shocked responses from many Eagle Rockers. Just about everyone agreed that there’s a pressing need to make that stretch of the neighborhood safer.

Many readers suggested that more streetlights along the street—particularly around the , where a jogger was brutally beaten by teenage thugs in February, and —would help deter crime. Interestingly, nobody suggested increased police patrolling, probably because that's a given—or because of the LAPD's manpower and other constraints.

We at Eagle Rock Patch want to pitch in with an idea: We propose that a group of dedicated and suitably trained Neighborhood Watch volunteers patrol Yosemite Drive at random hours on Segways—those sleek two-wheeled vehicles designed for riders to stand on and patrol sidewalks. (In many parts of the city, police officers and security personnel can be seen patrolling on these vehicles.)

We think, further, that necessary funding for a Segway pilot program on Yosemite Drive could come the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council and, perhaps, TERA as well.

What do you think? Have you felt in danger while walking down Yosemite Drive? What do you think needs to be done to make the street safer?
