‘No Parking’ Signs Pop Up Under 2 Freeway Bridge

The signs were recently installed after a pickup truck parked on Round Top Drive caught fire in September.

The curb isn’t painted red—not yet, anyway—and there's no word of enforcement. But the four “No Parking Any Time” signs are clearly visible to anyone driving up or down Round Top Drive as it ducks under the 2 freeway.

Perched about eight feet above the sidewalk, on both sides of the underpass near N. Avenue 42, the signs were recently installed by City authorities after a pick-up truck parked under the bridge burst into flames in the early hours of September 21.

Eagle Rock resident Herb West, who lives on Avenue 40, a stone’s throw from Round Top Drive, first brought the incident to the attention of the office of .

West recently alerted Eagle Rock Patch to the newly installed signs, which are aimed at preventing this particular stretch of Round Top Drive from continuing to be what he calls “a breeding ground for people who do bad things under the bridge.”

West was glad to see the signs for the first time this past Monday morning. But his satisfaction was somewhat short-lived. “Alas, in just 10 minutes this [Monday] morning, I saw two cars parked there between 9:10 a.m. and 9:25 a.m.,” he said in an e-mail to Eagle Rock Patch. The culprits either read the signs and ignore them, West theorizes, or just don't read them.

Maybe painting the curb red will reinforce the signs' message.
