Parking Meters Get a Makeover in Eagle Rock
Newer, high-tech meters are replacing the older ones across much of L.A.
Department of Transportation crews have been busy lately replacing old parking meters with new high-tech ones on Eagle Rock thoroughfares. The new meters are solar-powered, accept credit cards as well as coins, and don't malfunction as often, resulting in higher parking revenues to the city. Many motorists using the new apparatuses are pleased—but others clearly prefer the simpler, older meters. A lot of folks have been trying to figure out how to use the new meters, which are being installed in intensely-trafficked areas across the city.

I like the convenience of being able to use a credit card, frankly.

About time these old, non-functioning meters get fixed! After I noticed how many were broken half a year ago I called in to report all the broken meters (the woman on the other end cut me off after a while and said someone would investigate the situation) and posted about it on my blog, twice.

Today, behind Dave's Chillin, I put two quarters in a new meter and got nothing. No Minutes. I decided to risk it and went in for a sammy. When I came back I was getting a ticket but managed to get out of it by throwing another quarter in the meter and proving it was broken. I think the city owes me a quarter.

Carp: Actually, I think the city owes you a quarter, plus the value of the ticket you were about to get. You should take up the matter with your city councilmember. (Wonder if these new meters tend to be friendlier to credit cards than to coins.)

The "buttons" on the new meters are impossible to press-- has anybody noticed that?
Also pay close attention to that red "Pay to Park" sticker. According to the DOT's website, you can be ticketed if you park at a broken meter sporting that sticker. (http://www.ladot.lacity.org/wnarchive.htm#npark827) Taking all the fun out of driving in L.A...

So how about some detail on how a solar powered parking meter can read and authorize a credit card and how secure is that system?

The source of power has absolutely no effect on any processing performed by the meter.
