Raw Egg Attack Unsettles Dahlia Drive Homeowner

"Next time it could be a brick—or they could slash your tires," says the longtime Eagle Rock resident.

Marjorie Balce was eating dinner with her family in the kitchen of their Dahlia Heights home at around 9 p.m. this past Saturday when she heard the sound of something slamming against her bay window.

“It was like ‘thug!’” recalled Balce, trying to imitate the sound. “We thought somebody threw a rock or something.” Balce’s two dogs began barking and when her nephew went outside to check, he saw the window as well as the front door splattered with raw egg.

“It’s not the first time anybody did this,” said Balce, adding that the only other time eggs were thrown on her house was about two months ago. “But they didn’t get the window or door. Whoever did this was probably sending a message—I don’t know what it is and I’m wondering why they chose our house.”

Balce, who is studying to be a physical therapist, lives on a slightly uphill stretch of Dahlia Heights north of Hill Drive. Unsure if it was some teenagers or an adult who might be behind the attack, she called the police, not least because it’s unlikely anyone could have targeted the front door and window so accurately without trespassing into the driveway.

A Los Angeles Police Department officer arrived about an hour later. “He said it’s a Saturday night and this is the easiest way for people to do mischief,” Balce said.

Balce told the officer that whoever threw the eggs may have had something against her young niece or nephew. “I also told the officer that there’s probably a lot going on up the hill that we don’t know about,” she said, referring to some home construction activity that has been underway for the past couple of months.

A neighbor who lives up the street told Eagle Rock Patch that except for some vandalism around Halloween, his house has never targeted as Balce’s was. “We do have to be careful about burglaries,” he said. “Our cars get broken into all the time.”

Lately, said Balce, she has noticed an uptick in skateboarding by teenagers on the stretch of Loleta Drive between Hill and Colorado. A few weeks ago, she said, she saw several skateboarders holding onto a car and being around near Loleta by a teenager.

“I had never seen these kids before,” said Balce, who attends the monthly Neighborhood Watch meetings at Eagle Rock City Hall fairly regularly.

Balce wishes her neighbors, most of whom are retired, would be more active in keeping a watch on activities in the area. “I try to talk to them but they don’t want to get involved,” she said. “It seems like no one wants to help their neighbors here.”

Meanwhile, Balce is thinking of installing surveillance cameras outside her house. She also asked the LAPD officer to step up weekend patrols in the area at night, and told him that the next time her house is trespassed and targeted she would let her dogs loose on the attackers.

“I’m like, twice already—what’s going on?” she said. “Next time it could be a brick, or they could slash your tires. It’s scary.”
