What Should Replace Fresh & Easy if it Closes?

The grocery chain is up for sale, but if there are no buyers, the "neighborhood market" on Eagle Rock Boulevard could shut down.

The news earlier this month that Fresh & Easy, the British-owned grocery store chain, will soon be closed or sold came as a disappointment to many. After all, the “neighborhood market,” as the grocery chain branded itself, had become something of a local favorite in the few years of its existence, not least because it helped raise funds for schools through its popular "Shop for Schools" program.

According to a spokesperson at the grocery chain’s El Segundo headquarters, Fresh & Easy is currently up for sale, so there’s still a chance that its stores in California, Nevada and Arizona will survive. If the chain shuts down, however, what Fresh & Easy fans might see as a calamity may well be an opportunity for other businesses.

Jill Hammer, owner of the Eagle Rock boutique MediaNoche, would like to see a Whole Food’s store supplant the Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market on Eagle Rock Boulevard. Or maybe a Ralph’s store, says Hammer, given that there aren’t Ralph’s stores in Eagle Rock.
