The one-of-a-kind book festival promises a lot more than just food for thought.
“When we talk about cookbooks, you’ll be eating. When we discuss the city’s pub culture, you’ll be drinking. You’ll be performing your haiku while the kids take the lead in a Shakespeare scene.” If that sounds like your idea of fun—or too much fun—you should head over today, Saturday, to the first-ever Pasadena LitFest, a book festival, whose organizers conceived the above-stated scenarios and who certainly seem to embrace the unconventional. The festival was initially scheduled on March 17 but had to be canceled because of heavy rain that day. It is being held in Central Park (275 S. Raymond Ave.), a few blocks south of Old Pasadena, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Among the prominent authors participating in the festival are …

Remember Mickey Cohen, who was pals with everyone from Sinatra to Nixon?
Nick Waterhouse is playing at the Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m.
L.A. Weekly has called him a “tightly wound, meticulous rock and roll scholar.” His singing, remarked the Chicago Tribune earlier this month, “teeters out of control every so often, like he’s trying to tamp down a wild animal in his throat.” And Los Angeles Magazine likened his latest album, Time’s All Gone, to a trip in a time machine where listeners find themselves in “a world where pop music stopped in 1967.” The musician in question is Nick Waterhouse, a 25-year-old Echo Park resident with a clean cut, who shall be doing his gritty rock-and-roll act tonight, Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. Check out Waterhouse seamlessly commanding a dozen musicians and crooners in this video recording in San Francisco …

An earlier title than Sendak's most famous book, Where the Wild Things Are, has a higher circulation.
Maurice Sendak, the renowned illustrator and writer of children’s books, died Tuesday at the age of 83 in Danbury, CT, prompting The New York Times to eulogize how he “wrenched the picture book out of the safe, sanitized world of the nursery and plunged it into the dark, terrifying and hauntingly beautiful recesses of the human psyche.” Regarded as “the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century,” as the Times put it, Sendak was the creator of numerous works, no less than 26 of which are at the Eagle Rock branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, according to Vivian Khan, the children’s librarian there. You’d think Where the Wild Things Are, Sendak’s groundbreaking 1963 work, would be the most-borrowed of all the titles at …

Eager to see the latest draft of a law that would allow more murals in L.A.? You'll have to wait.
Angelenos who were hoping this month to see the final draft of an ordinance that would once again allow murals on private property will need to keep waiting, according to Tanner Blackman, a planner in the Los Angeles City Planning Department. Blackman has been serving a liaison between community members and city hall as Los Angeles has attempted to draft an ordinance that would legalize new murals and decriminalize existing ones. The city has prohibited the painting of murals on private property since 2002. After holding several community input meetings throughout the city—including one in Eagle Rock—the city released the first draft of the ordinance at a ceremony in Boyle Heights. A 60-day comment period, which closed in February, …

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Center of the Arts will host a reception to honor the recent works of emerging and established independent comic artists.
The goal of this year’s impressive and eclectic lineup is to promote the incredible talent that lives in town. About 25 percent of performers are South Pas residents.
Eagle Rock music fans may be interested in "South by South Pas." That’s what local singer/songwriter Brad Colerick likes to call South Pasadena’s annual Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk. “I used to go to South by Southwest every year when it was a much smaller event than it is now. It was something I looked forward to … to discover new artists and hear a lot of great music,” said Colerick of the annual concert in Austin. And while he doesn’t foresee South Pasadena’s ever getting that big, he does say “it can continue to get better and better as it gets more established and more notoriety.” This year’s lineup is impressive and, well, eclectic. Headlining the Carnegie Stage is three-time Grammy-winning composer and pianist Billy Childs, …

Sunday’s annual event drew a huge crowd—and the Center for the Arts is still calculating the funds it raised.
By all accounts, last Sunday’s 10th Annual Art Auction to raise funds for the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, was a crowd-pleaser. There were some great deals on art, according to CFAER Development Director Renée Dominique, not to mention delicious food provided by our very own Bellissimo Café and Whole Foods (Glendale), plus libations by Colorado Wine Company (sparkling white sangria) and the Green Bar Collective (free samples of GT’s Kombucha). We hope you enjoy this sampling of photographs taken at the auction.
