Glendale Adventist Medical Center Offers Low-Cost Prostate Cancer Screening Sept. 19
WHAT: Glendale Adventist Medical Center will offer its annual low-cost prostate cancer screenings on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 7:30 PM at the hospital’s Cancer Center, located at 381 Merrill Avenue, Building A, Glendale.
WHO: The screenings will be provided by Glendale Adventist physicians as well as Glendale family practice residents. The test will cost $10, and will consist of a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, as well as a digital rectal exam.
WHY: Screenings are particularly important for men over the age of 50 who have no symptoms of prostate cancer (no blood in urine, no difficulty in starting/stopping urine flow, no pain with urinating) and men under age 50 who are at high risk for prostate cancer (family history of prostate cancer or elevated PSA level).
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men, as nearly two thirds of men are diagnosed at the age of 65 or older. About 1 in 36 men will die of prostate cancer, as it is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. However, when diagnosed early the survival rate for prostate cancer is high, as more than 2 million men in the U.S. count themselves as prostate cancer survivors.
