Comments of the Week: 'I Don't Like to Make Assumptions So I Just Rode My Bike Up and Down Ave 64'

Check out the best, funniest, strangest and most informative things our readers have to say.

We take pride in our work here at Patch and always strive to bring our readers interesting news. However, we must admit, sometimes the most interesting part of a great Patch story is the comments from readers that it sparks.

Here are some of the best, funniest, strangest and most informative comments from Patch stories around the Northeast L.A. and Hollywood Patch sites this past week:

‘Ghost Bike’ on Avenue 64 Memorializes Cyclist Who Crashed There and Died

Patch editor Ajay Singh reports that two weeks following the cycling accident of José Cuellar on the border of Garvanza and Pasadena, the LAPD has launched an investigation. Additionally, the accident has stirred up a discussion within the neighborhood for the need of a traffic control solution in the area.

Reader Marino Pascal gets our Comment of the Week award for taking matters into his own hands following numerous comments in the story. He got on his bike, experienced the road conditions himself and shared his findings.

Marino Pascal July 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm I don't like to make assumptions so I just rode my bike up and down Ave 64. Downhill the top speed I was able to reach was 23 mph and I was wobbling like crazy because the surface is so bad. It may not be bad enough for cars but it's bad for bicycles. Also the last 200 yards of southbound Ave 64 before Church are pitch black. There is a light on the east side but with all the trees it does nothing for the west side. I still don't know what caused the accident but if I was to make the street safer for cyclists I would add lights and resurface the street. Roundabouts are good too. Every bicycle accident I had in Los Angeles was from poor road conditions (potholes, cracks) exacerbated by bad lighting. I've cracked a few ribs never scratched my head.
This discussion on helmets after someone's death reminds me how people used to discuss the clothing and morality of rape victims. I know you mean well but it's very inappropriate and disrespectful to the victim and the family.

Coming to a Lamppost Near You: Eagle Rock Pride
The Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council votes on the design of a lightpole banner intended to instill civic pride in the community.

While some readers were in support of the concept, some offered their critiques on the design. Check out the story and post your thoughts.

vicbaron July 5, 2013 at 10:41 am A vintage looking sign is good.
No comment on the overall design but The arrows make no sense. Every Other light post is more than enough. Hopefully only a 6 month campaign, we who live here do not need to see these banners up indefinitely.

Omar A. Gonzalez July 5, 2013 at 10:16 am decent, maybe to big of an emphasis on the Old Town bridge is a bit to big on the design but I like it, maybe lose the arrows pointing down also.

Jaycee July 5, 2013 at 08:17 am Nice idea, poorly executed - if they are going to use an old picture it should at least be something that represents Eagle Rock completely - for the sake of 'Civic Pride'.
