Coyote Sighting on Hill Drive

A daring coyote gets into a staring match with a local resident.

Kaye Beckham, a former president of the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce, was driving to her home on Hill Drive one recent night when she saw what appeared to be a large, brown dog ahead of her.

When she looked closely, Beckham noticed that the animal didn’t have a collar. It wasn’t a dog but a coyote. What was odd was that it was around 7 p.m.—not your typical time of day for a coyote sighting.

“You usually see them early in the morning,” said Beckham, adding that she came across another coyote recently. The coyote, pictured here, was as bold as they come. Beckham’s husband David had to stare the coyote down before it moved out of their path, Beckham said.

“It’s not their fault,” she added. “We took their habitat away by building the 134 freeway and it’s hard for them to find food.”

Correction: This article initially identified Beckham's husband as Jim. The correct name is David—Beckham's first husband, who passed away, was Jim.

The coyote is been seen many times in the last few months , it is a young one, no packs close by. This is not unusual in the area.

I saw a coyote pup yesterday at around 1 p.m..on the westernmost part of Los Flores. He turned north on Sierra Villa and squeezed through a fence heading toward the freeway. I've seen coyotes around the neighborhood before, but I'd never seen one this young. I wasn't able to get a good picture.

I was woken up at 3:00AM this morning by a yipping coyote around Wildwood Drive, up on the hill. They're fairly common up in this area; I heard them a couple of times a month.

I believe Kay's husbands name is DAVID , not Jim.
Ajay Singh (Editor) December 2, 2012 at 03:31 pm
Thanks for correcting that, Rmt. Jim was Kaye's first, now passed, husband.

We see them all the time when walking our dog on Hill Drive. You will be doing them a favor if you attempt to scare them off with clapping. They have gotten very bold the past few years. A few have followed my dog and I. I only knew after a bicyclist and driver warned me. We saw the pup a few weeks ago.

Just saw another, full-grown one this morning coming down Estes Rd. at Neal Dr., north of Hill. It was about 9:30 a.m. and he just kind of sauntered by us as we walked.

I saw one recently on Hill Drive, near Mount Royal, but I wasn't 100% sure it was a coyote. Looking at this picture, though, convinced me......

I live on a hill on the other side of Colorado blvd near Eagle Rock High school and usually see coyotes in the early mornings but the last couple years I've been seeing them at different times during the day.

Been seeing a young (1-2 years old) coyote looking for food nightly at the corner of Ellenwood Place & Las Flores around 10pm. Have warned neighbors with small dogs & cats!

I seem them on almost a daily basis in Echo Park, on the outskirts of Elysian Park. They live all over the neighborhood and are active all times of day but mostly morning and evening. I second the comment about scaring them away if you can. I admire them as much as anybody else, and I understand that we are coexisting in the same territory but if they lose their natural fear of humans, it will be to their detriment and will make them a bigger threat to small pets. So do them a favor and scare them away.

All those Lost Pet postings tell the story...coyotes feed here regularly and always have. Nothing new - we are part of the natural world, although we frequently forget this simple truth.

Mj: Any witnesses to this incident will probably be key to your attempts to prove your son is notRead More lying. You might want to consider speaking to the parents of the student witnesses to try to ensure that the students will come forward and testify if necessary. If the parents can write—or sign—letters supporting your son's version of events, all the better. Get the letters notarized and send them to the concerned authorities, including at LAUSD and LAPD.

Maybe they're moving to the space next door to the Comic Book shop. I'd say that there is a 50/50Read More chance that place becomes a massage parlor. Now that the bike lanes are decided, we need to come together to get these "rub and tug" joints closed.

I'm thinking that this may have something to do with it - from the "Grand Theft Auto"Read More story posted today: "In addition, the vice unit of the LAPD Northeast Community Station arrested four women for alleged prostitution during recent investigations of 10 massage parlors in Eagle Rock, Preciado said. Two others were arrested for running massage parlors without a state massage therapy license, Preciado said, adding that the vice unit has not released the addresses where the 10 massage parlors are located.
