Eagle Rock Church Part of Easter Service at Hollywood Bowl

The Christian Assembly Church on Colorado Boulevard will join the Bel Air Presbyterian Church in an "Easter at the Bowl" service Sunday.

Easter observances in the Southland this Sunday will include a service at the Hollywood Bowl organized by Bel Air Presbyterian Church and the Eagle Rock-based Christian Assembly Foursquare Church; masses at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels; and the inaugural “The Run of St. John” from San Gabriel Mission to Lacy Park in San Marino.

The “Easter at the Bowl” service will feature a worship choir, orchestra, band and an address by pastor and best-selling author Francis Chan. The service will begin at 11 a.m., with doors and parking lots opening at 9 a.m. Worshipers are advised to be seated by 10:30 a.m. Tickets are not necessary.

Because parking at the Hollywood Bowl is extremely limited, organizers are encouraging participants to take public transportation or park at the Hollywood & Highland Center or the Ventura lot at 10801 Ventura Blvd.    The Hollywood Bowl is served by the 156 and 222 Metro Bus lines. There is a Metro Red Line station at the Hollywood and Highland Center and the Ventura lot is located near the Universal City/Studio City Station.    Shuttle bus service from the Hollywood and Highland Center and Ventura lot will depart approximately every 15 minutes beginning at 9 a.m.

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez will celebrate Easter Sunday Mass in English at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. During the Mass of the Resurrection of Our Lord, after all the faithful have renewed their baptismal promises, Gomez will bless them with Easter holy water as a reminder that in and through Christ they have died and been born again through the waters of baptism.

Additional Easter Masses will be celebrated at the Cathedral at 8 a.m. in English and 12:30 p.m. in Spanish, with a bilingual Mass set for 2:30 p.m.

The inaugural Run of St. John, re-enacting the run of St. John to Jesus' empty tomb, will begin at 7:30 a.m. by the San Gabriel Mission's old mission church. It will go north to Lacy Park in San Marino, then return to the San Gabriel Mission, where a pancake breakfast will be served.

“Lacy Park was once Wilson Park, which fed water to San Gabriel Mission and the surrounding area,” said the Rev. Bruce Wellems, pastor of San Gabriel Mission. “By running there we recommit ourselves to new life.” Organizers hope to hold the approximately four-mile run annually.

Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, is the oldest and most important Christian celebration. Christians believe that by rising from the dead, Jesus demonstrated his power over sin and death, manifesting his divinity as the son of God.

“For Catholics, Easter is a time of joy,” Gomez said. “Easter tells us that God's love is stronger than death. Because Jesus has risen from the dead, we know we will rise with him. His resurrection sends us out on a mission—to tell others about Jesus and to bring his new life and freedom to the poor, the lonely and those suffering from injustice.”
