Five Ways to Go Green

Patch recommends recycling, organic spa treatments, biking and more for green and healthy living.

1. FEAST at Oxy

The Food, Energy and Sustainability Team (FEAST) at is a student-run organic garden always in need of volunteers. Students, faculty and community members plant, harvest, compost, take care of chickens and host regular dinners. Volunteering with FEAST is a great way to sustain the environment, learn about organic growing, and connect with green-loving individuals. Read Philipp Sander’s feature story on Eagle Rock Patch, “Fighting For a Better World, One Plate at a Time,” about a dinner with this group last March. Read more on the FEAST website or check out their facebook page.

This Eagle Rock spa bills itself as a “beautiful fusion of nature and science,” and it is oh so green. It only uses and sells eco-friendly products and has been featured in Yogi Times and California Magazine. The spa was also named “best organic spa” in 2007 and received the “four leaves award” from Los Angeles Greenopia. The spa is located at 2511 Colorado Blvd. Reach them at 323-344-8259.

3. Ride Your Bike!

Riding your bike to work or school instead of taking a car isn’t a new idea, but it’s still a good one. Release endorphins into your body instead of gas fumes into the air! from Occidental College professor, environmentalist and Eagle Rock Patch columnist .

4. Recycle!

Recycling is such a basic principle of eco-friendly living. Did you know the upper level of the parking lot has a recycling facility that’s open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.? Don’t throw your plastic, cans and bottles into the trash; bag them and drop them off to be recycled. Sure, it’s a little extra effort, but the difference it makes to Earth is worth it!

5. Get Green While You Clean!

Editor Ajay Singh supplied his own “going green” tips in honor of Earth Day in March. He recommended trading your average cleaning product, laden with “toxic chemicals directly linked to cancer, reproductive disorders, lung and skin damage” for organic cleaning products, which will keep your home clean and more importantly, your family safe. Eagle Rock has great stores like and that offer organic cleaning products. .
