This Saturday, Oct. 6, local residents, music fans and visiting scenesters will convene along Colorado Boulevard to enjoy the audible cross currents of 70 bands, artists and DJ’s at one of Southern California’s largest and most eclectic outdoor music events—the 14th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival.
The downbeat is at 2 p.m. and the last chorus ends at 11. Within those nine hours, sounds will reverberate from 11 separate stages across an inspired spectrum of multidimensional music.
Among the many highlights: Kid-friendly music kicks off on the Family Stage at 2:30 p.m., with Apple Brains as they promote songs for kids of all ages about fruits, vegetables, and good health.
Meanwhile, grownups and aficionados of low-fi rock can gravitate to The Ship Studios Stage and Kingsize Sound Labs Stage—side-by-side platforms that will have no downtime between acts—to see bands such as Wrightwood and Terraplane Sun in sequence at 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.
Rowdy and rambunctious local favorites Tijuana Panthers will deliver their transcendent post-garage rock vibe, replete with catchy choruses and surf guitar riffs on the Emerging Stage at 8 p.m., as a cast of indie, rock and local bands light up the night.
The Eagle Rock High School Jazz Ensemble opens the Rantz Stage at 4 p.m., introducing a roster of International/Global Bass artists, including the incendiary percussion-heavy Latin ensemble Boogaloo Assassins at 8:20 p.m.
On the Stones Throw Stage, International/Funk/ Soul/Hip Hop fans can groove at 7:15 p.m. with Chrome Canyon and with Peanut Butter Wolf at 9:45—with a promised “Special Guest” sandwiched in between at 9 p.m.
Directly in front of the Los Angeles Filipino-American Church, catch the in-the-moment improvisational alchemy of SASSAS Soundshop, a collective of musicians, technicians and musical theorists.
If your feet tire of traversing the hard pavement of Colorado Boulevard, consider dropping into the friendly environs of the Women’s Twentieth Century Club of Eagle Rock at the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Hermosa Street for folk, roots and Americana, with the likes of old-time band Triple Chicken Foot, who take the stage at 9:15 p.m.
You can also drop into Camilo’s California Bistro for Dan Olivo and his Jazz Combo—or enjoy an adult beverage and jazz at Colombo's Italian Restaurant and Jazz Club, where an impressive line-up of solo artists and bands such as Tawny Ellis and Pilgrim will be featured, in addition to the club’s outdoor stage, where artists and bands will hold forth under the stars.
With the emergence of electronic dance music into the mainstream, the DUBLAB Stage promises thunderous DJ sets and performances ranging from Rough Trade All Stars (Live) and a closing set from Thundercat, the Los Angeles bass prodigy Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner, who has conspired with everyone from Flying Lotus and Kanye West to Jessica Simpson and Erykah Badu. To close the evening, Delicious Vinyl will be presenting Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde Live. The full album will be performed from start to finish, featuring Fatlip, Slimkid3 (formerly of The Pharcyde), J.Sw!ft, L.A. Jay and special guests.
From children’s music to electronica, the Ukulele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere to Bloody Death Skull and virtually everything in between, the 14th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival extends its shining legacy with a glorious celebration of music, camaraderie and community.
