DeSilva Imports is co-hosting Folk Art Is Fine Art: The Art
Of Oaxaca And Northern Mexico from December 17, 2011 to January 15, 2012 in partnership with Modern Mata Ortiz and Fremont Gallery. The address for the event location is Fremont Gallery 812 Fremont Avenue, Suite 100; South
Pasadena, CA 91030. Opening hours are from 11:00am to 6:00pm on Friday and Saturday, and 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday.

Adalberto Perez Meillon from Ensenada, Baja California will be on hand during the closing weekend to demonstrate the painting of designs inspired by ancient traditions on papel amate. Papel amate is a natural paper that is hand made from tree bark in Mexico. Adalberto learned the traditional Casas Grandes designs from the potters of Mata Ortiz. As a young man, Adalberto began his career as a teacher in the region surrounding Mata Ortiz. His students brought him to local archaeological sites such as the ruins of Paquime, where he became fascinated by an ancient civilization linked to the Pueblo Indians and the Mogollon culture. The inhabitants of Paquime disappeared many centuries ago, but shards of pottery showing the Casas Grandes designs are still prevalent in the region. Adalberto draws inspirations from these ancient designs. He continues to elevate a traditional art form to the level of fine
art, while using the natural tree bark paper that is most often used in the folk art of Mexico.
