Students will learn to create their own hand-drawn or painted large format murals, using artist Chuck Close’s method of dividing up a larger work into smaller components utilizing a grid. In addition to creating their own work, each student will contribute a piece to a large scale group work.

This technique in drawing is foundational and requires no extensive experience in art making. Students will also learn to use the grid system as an artistic tool to overcome the usually daunting size of creating larger work, as well as critically thinking and applying the Gestalt principles of design.

This workshop is supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.
