Woodwind player-composer Vinny Golia is now undeniabley an elder statesman of creative jazz in Los Angeles. Originally from New York and previously an accomplished painter, Golia has persevered and evolved over a remarkably prolific and diligent span of decades to achieve global notoriety. Here is a superb example of how intricate compositional ideas and tight ensemble playing combined with open-ended interpretation, loose and multi-directional improvisation, and displays of spontaneous and creative virtuosity to make a seamless and fully satisfying musical whole.
Opening the evening is a duo that goes by the name the Curiosities. The two musicians in question are Seattle-based mega-multi-hyphenate phenom Amy Denio and wonderful local veteran music-making stalwart Emily Hay.
For over 14 years Open Gate has produced and presented Sunday Evening Music Series. Currently and for the last nine years it has been presented at and with Center for the Arts Eagle Rock. It takes place on the first Sunday of the month; usually with two bands. The music is hard to classify but there is a lot of adventurous improvisation, some could be called "Free Jazz", some could be called "Sonic Explorations", some could be called "New Opera", etc. Alex Cline and Will Salmon have produced the series from it's begging.
