Kids Have Cabin Fever? Get Them Invested in the Arts

The Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, still has some open spaces in its wildly popular nine-week summer arts program.

Still looking to break up the summer for your kids? The Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, still has space in its popular nine-week summer arts program, which started last week on June 10 and is scheduled to continue through August 9.

“Our forts have taken over the permanent gallery, the campers have been collaborating to create a play together using storyboards they've drawn, and we've made so many beautiful and unique art projects and ceramic sculptures,” said CFAER Education Director Laura Marchetti.

Divided into three groups—Visual Arts, Performance, and Pioneering—the camp is open to children aged six years to 12 years. All programs are student-driven—that is, every effort is made to facilitate rather than squelch what campers end up doing whether in visual arts, playwriting and dance or ceramics, cooking and gardening.

Many of the programs are taught by local contemporary artists who have backgrounds in art history and play-based learning. Instructors incorporate their own studio practices into the program, creating an innovative curriculum that allows children to explore their creative talent, express themselves artistically and create bonds with community peers.

“They'll discover their voice and their talent for creating, and best of all, they'll make lots of new friends locally,” Marchetti said, adding that Cathy Rios, the mother of one of the campers, had this to say about her older son’s experience:

“The boys had a great time and my older son, who wasn't as interested in art, has being drawing everyday since camp.”

Tuition fees for CFAER family-level members (or higher) is $225 per week. Tuition for non-members is $250 per week. Click here to register.
