Oxy Exhibit Looks for Art in Bicyles

The exhibit opens on Thursday and will be preceded by a bicycle ride from Occidental to the Bike Oven in Highland Park.

Whether from the frame of a fixed-gear or the saddle of a 12-speed, Occidental College senior Margaret Gallagher believes there's art to be found in bicycles.

On Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m., the Gallagher-curated installation, Bicycle Art Show, will open at Occidental College's Weingart Gallery.

Gallagher said she originally had hoped to create an event that would spark more interest in Occidental's bike share program. However, when she started mulling the idea of an art show, the project turned into something much larger.

In an interview with Patch on Monday afternoon, Gallagher said the pieces in the Bicycle Art Show run the gamut from those inspired (and built) from bicycles, to those found in the act of riding.

"One of the most distinctive pieces is a unicorn fabricated from a bicycle," Gallagher said. "There's also a lot of photography. There's a 19-photo installation capturing a Midnight Ridazz ride."

The show also includes works from Gallagher and several other Occidental students. The majority of the pieces come from artists who live in the Northeast Los Angeles area.

"It's not just about the intersection of bicycles and art, but it's about the intersection of bicycles and art in this community," Gallagher said.

The Bicycle Art Show opens at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Weingart Gallery at Occidental College, 1600 Campus Road, in Eagle Rock.

Prior to the show, a bicycle ride will commence at 5 p.m. at Campus and Alumni Roads before departing for the Bike Oven at 3706 N. Figueroa St. in Highland Park.
