5 Eagle Rock Stores Judged ‘Favorite Businesses’ in Los Angeles

Green Bean and Purple Twig are outright winners in Red Tricycle's 'Totally Awesome Awards' for 2011.

Two Eagle Rock stores have won the 2011 “Totally Awesome Awards” and three others ran as finalists in a citywide competition by Red Tricycle, a prominent and independent online family site that says it offers “must-have recommendations for hip people who happen to be parents too.”

The two local winners are , a self-described “community family resource” on Eagle Rock Boulevard, and , an art exploration studio on Colorado Boulevard.

The awards, announced Monday, covered a total of 34 categories ranging from music classes and mom-run businesses to date nightspots and family dentists. Click here to see the full list of awards and their winners as well as finalists.

142,865 Online Nominations

The awards’ results were evidently based on 142,865 online nominations for “favorite businesses,” according to Red Tricycle, which covers children-related activities in five cities, including San Francisco, San Diego, Portland and Seattle.

The Green Bean won Red Tricycle’s award in the “Kids Clothing Retail Stores” category, which included 10 finalists. The popular neighborhood store was also a finalist in the “Consignment Resale Shop” and “Toy Shops and Books Stores” categories.

Green Bean Owner 'Blown Away'

“I was blown away,” says Green Bean owner Traci Green, especially since her store isn’t even a year old yet and will celebrate its first anniversary on December 4. “In our tiny area, it’s kind of hard to picture the land around you, so it’s really nice to hear that so many people know about us.”

Three other Eagle Rock stores also came out on top as finalists for the Red Tricycle awards, which are sponsored by the noted baby store giggle. was among eight finalists in the “Kid-Friendly Coffee Shops” category, and was among 10 finalists in the “Ice Cream and FroYo Shops” category.

The third finalist was , which placed third in the “Indoor Playspaces” category. The winner in this category was The Awesome Playground, located just across from Eagle Rock, on York Boulevard, in Highland Park.
