A Trip to Wonderland on NELA Second Saturday

Suggestions for an interesting evening.

I hope you know about NELA’s Second Saturday Gallery Night, when the galleries in our neck of the artistic woods open their doors and let us enjoy and explore.

Across Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Glassell Park and Cypress Park every second Saturday, galleries keep their doors open for us from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Go to the Second Saturday site, print out a map, grab someone you love, get some food—go out and appreciate.

, on Colorado Boulevard, continues with its show, “Laws of Attraction: An Artists’ Couples Exhibit,” in which the work of eight couples is shown. The idea is to explore the hidden connections in the visual art of artist couples. Even if you aren’t familiar with all of them, the matching of their work is a fascinating thing to see. (Check out the photos to your right.) This show closes on Friday, June 17.

One of my favorite places, on York Boulevard, is the MorYork Gallery, which this month has a group show of work titled “Assembled,” by Robert Heintz, Beth Bachenheimer, Rhonda Heintz and Victoria Roberts. Museums and galleries have come to mean many things to many people in the art world, but MorYork Gallery is a place that really is an example of what the original museums were meant to be—Cabinets of Wonder.

, on Eagle Rock Boulevard, is one place I’m going to visit for sure today.

In its daytime incarnation, this place is a shop where you can find not only one-of-a-kind gifts but also workshops where you can learn to make your own beaded jewelry.

Leanna Lin is the wonder behind Wonderland. “The idea of a gallery/pop-up shop came to me when I wanted a place to showcase my own jewelry line and also feature artists and their products,” she says. “Because of the economy, not everyone can afford art, but here they can come to an art opening event and walk away with something like prints, cards, jewelry, etc.”

This Saturday at Wonderland you will find a show titled “Magical Summerland,” which promises to be a celebration of summer that revolves around the theme of an old-fashioned boardwalk with mermaids, sea creatures, boardwalk food, music, drinks and more.

“This will also be our launch to summer event, “ says Lin. “So come dressed up in costume, maybe in the style of ‘Mad Men.’”

Artists featured at Wonderland are Axel Honey, Crowded Teeth, Maureen Shields, Glenda Rolle, T&A Friendly. The local band MIRDEN will be performing at 8:30 p.m.

And parked in front of Wonderland will be a couple of L.A.’s food trucks. If you haven’t indulged in this part of L.A.’s rapidly growing culture, here is a good opportunity. Lake Street Creamery, purveyor of wonderful ice cream, and the new Auntie's Fry Bread, described as Native American fusion, will be there to delight you.
