‘BMPP @ 5 Line’ Takes Eagle Rock Back to its Roots—at Least in Name

A twofer pizzeria and upcoming bar on Colorado and Caspar has an interesting business concept.

A little more than three months after Corner Pizzeria was bought out by a Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria franchise on the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Caspar Avenue, the new restaurant has undergone a complete facelift—under a tricky name.

BMPP @ 5 Line, as the restaurant is called, is really two next-door businesses with the same name: BMPP refers to the pizzeria, which was refurbished last month, while 5 Line is the name of a full-liquor bar expected to open in about two months.

Except for the same set of owners and a shared wall, the two businesses near Friday’s Farmers’ Market have nothing in common. Those familiar with the neighborhood’s history will have no trouble recognizing that the bar’s name is a tribute to the 5 Line “Yellow Cars” trolley system that once linked Eagle Rock to downtown Los Angeles and the City of Hawthorne.

“We are taking the community back to its roots,” Hovik Dan Kechabashyan, one of the four partners behind the twin venture, told Eagle Rock Patch. “We are creating a lounge type of place where people can hang out—a happy atmosphere for everyone to come and enjoy.”

Although 5 Line was the brainchild of Eddie Kadinyan, who owned Corner Pizzeria and displayed architectural renderings for the bar at a couple of Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council meetings last year, the upcoming business will have nothing to do with the previous owner’s plans, according to Kechabashyan.

The bar will also evidently not be modeled on the BJ’s chain of casual restaurants, as a manager at the BMPP franchise had told Patch last October, infuriating some readers.

“It will be its own thing,” said Kechabashyan, adding, however, that this would be the first time that a BMPP franchise would be linked to a full-liquor bar.

There’s also some good news for Corner Pizzeria regulars who were sorry to see the restaurant go after just two years and nine months in business.

“Corner Pizzeria was supposed to be a Big Mama’s pizzeria when it originally started,” Kechabashyan said. “But they backed out at the last minute, although they had our menu. Their ‘Giant Sicilian’ pizza was our ‘Big Mama.’ We have ‘egg gondola pizza,’ they used to call it ‘kapouri.’”

Stay tuned for news about 5 Line’s opening.

This restaurant is going to take Eagle Rock back to its roots? Yeah right. These guys aren't even from here. Sorry, but I will definitely NOT be dining at this dive.
Jeff February 15, 2013 at 11:42 am
Hold on, Here come the angry Eagle Rocker comments.
People, its just a pizza joint, relax.

I'm all for someone trying hard to create a place people will want to go to. From the looks of the place so far, I think it will be a great addition. Now if someone can do something with the great building that Panang is slowly ruining....
Scott Martin-Rowe February 15, 2013 at 12:38 pm
"These guys aren't even from here." Really? What does that have to do with anything? I guess we should also close down Oinkster and Four Cafe if that is your criteria. Something makes me think this is another pizza joint in the area getting nervous and using a disguise. Maybe a smaller place, not too far away, that just lost their alcohol-selling neighbor?
John Wayne's Honda February 15, 2013 at 01:36 pm
"from here" do you remember the talking Christmas Tree in the mall? Didn't think so
John Wayne's Honda February 15, 2013 at 01:37 pm
I have had there delivery, they are quick and cheerful and the pizza is really good! best of luck 5 Line
AFG February 15, 2013 at 02:33 pm
I'm glad to hear that they will still have kapouri under a different name.

Interesting timing on this article. I was hopeful when I went there last night, but actually walked out without ordering. The pizza I saw people eating looked really, really, bad. Then we asked after the "tortilla crust" pizzas, which I assumed had a very thing tortilla like crust. Turns out they are actually made with a tortilla. Not to say this is a horrible thing, but it sounds way more like something a desperately tired parent makes their kid for a snack... then it does something you would pay $7+ for at a restaurant.
I guess I hope they survive, but man'o'man do I wish they were at Two Boots, a Pizzanista, or even Brownstone which is less than a block away.

Good on them! They've done some nice work to the building, adding lights and a snazzy facade. It looks way better than it did when it was Corner Pizza, which looked like a chain. I'm amazed they got permits for a full bar, but why should Colombo's and Black Boar have the monopoly? And as far as I know, Eagle Rock has no roots, other than Indians, Midwestern farmers, and the drunks at Toppers, so the 5-Line is as good as anything to latch on to. At least they're making an effort, which we should all appreciate and encourage if we care about revitalizing Colorado Blvd. Diversity = good. New business = good. (And ditto to the comment above about Panang.)

I've tried the gluten free pizzas before and were delicious. Hoping that this place is a successful business in the heart of Eagle Rock.
OmarA. G February 15, 2013 at 04:53 pm
YES! They should brig back Bob's Big boy back to that building, I believe they were the original tenants of that building way back when. I think we have enough Asian food options on Colorado, I'm all for variety change it up.
AFG February 15, 2013 at 05:08 pm
I whole heartedly agree! Something like Bob's or Bob's would be fantastic addition to ER!
OmarA. G February 15, 2013 at 05:21 pm
Gluten free? say no more I'm all over it.
Dspencer February 15, 2013 at 10:30 pm
i don't get it. I am really confused. why Big Mama's and Papa's ? 5 Line seems like a great space and location for cool neighborhood bar. But, FFS! Big Mama's and Papa's--- is this a joke ? Why doesn't this Hovik fella hire a proper chef and make a real restaurant out of the 5 Line space...an original menu. The people of ER don't want to eat at shitty chain restaurants.
Michael Turmon February 15, 2013 at 11:25 pm
The mods to the building look great. The menu looks like crap. Like 120 slightly different kinds of the same pizza.
Kayla Art February 16, 2013 at 03:01 am
This is a great addition the ER, something new with many healthy options. I've had thier pizza and its amazing! Kudos to them for revitalizing Colorado and bringing back some old history. My family will definitely be dining there. Looking forward to the bar/lounge as well.

I've been there and I love the variety of their menu. It's not just a "pizza joint". They have a variety of delicious, warm, mouth watering sandwiches. They're wings are juicy and so good with so many different selection of sauces. They got pasta, appetizers and a huge variety of pizzas, each looks and taste as good as the next. I should know, I've had many of them. LOL. Plus, the provide something I don't see too often - great and friendly customer service! If the bar next door is anything like their pizza place, it's going to be one hell of a great corner over there. Can't wait to see the bar.
Harry Vore February 16, 2013 at 03:27 pm
My brother James turned me to to this place and for once he got something right. LOL! I met Dan, who runs the place, and he's a Stand-Up guy. He makes sure not only is the food good but he goes out of his way to make sure the customers are happy. Great food, Great service. Can't wait for the bar to open next door. It sounds like the perfect place for my brother and I to go catch football games on Sundays and Monday/Thursday nights as well as basketball and baseball.
Jets Fan 4 Life! February 16, 2013 at 03:41 pm
Well said Jerry. I agree with you 100%. I've seen it too and I'm amazed at the transformation. I've talked to one of the owners (not sure his name) but what he told me is consistent with the changes I see. They want to make this a nice, relaxing, comfortable place with a fun, positive atmosphere. Whether you go there to watch a sporting event (watch your favorite team play) or you want a place to hang out with family and friends. This is not going to be your typical dive bar, but a fun place for all. Good Luck Gentlemen. Looking forward to the opening!
Jets Fan 4 Life! February 16, 2013 at 03:47 pm
Finally!!!! An ideal place for me and my buddies to go watch our games on Sundays, Monday nights, and Thursday nights. This bar/lounge is going to be Off the Hook!!! Plus they have great food right next door. I think I found my new second home. :) Good Luck BMPP @ 5 Line!!!!!!
Scott Martin-Rowe February 16, 2013 at 04:19 pm
Hmmm. I feel like this has been hijacked by the owners. To much enthusiasm. Good luck on the new place guys. I hope it does well.
Harry Vore February 16, 2013 at 04:27 pm
LOL!!! I assure you Scott, I'm neither one of the owners, nor do I have any stake in the business. My only interest is the fact that my brother and I always have to drive to other areas like Pasadena, Glendale, or Burbank to catch our games. We're just excited that there's FINALLY going to be a decent place in ER where we can go watch our games. ER needs this.
Scott Martin-Rowe February 16, 2013 at 04:51 pm
That may be true Harry, I just found it a little suspicious that you and your brother both responded within 11 minutes of one another. I'm looking forward to a good place to watch the game as well. I sincerely hope that they have good beers on tap. Please get some North Coast Brewing or ER Brewery in there!

"Like 120 slightly different kinds of the same pizza dripping with grease, and slightly burnt." <-- been there, ate that, fixed your comment. I love the fixes to the exterior, and hope they improve the product on the interior.

Thank you for the great article! And thank you ALL for the support, questions, interest in our Eagle Rock location! If you would like to contact Big Mama's directly, feel free to email me at socialmedia@bigmamaspizza.com.
We appreciate all for your patience as we work on completing our first ever full bar, "BMPP @ 5 Line"! As the article mentions, right now we're serving pizza, chicken wings, sandwiches and oh so much more (pizza nachos, anyone?!) in our pizza shop, and hope to have the full bar ready to go by Spring 2013. We are very excited to join the ER community! We are open to any sponsorship or fundraising ideas for the local schools. We will also be organizing a Grand Opening Event in a few months once the "5 Line" bar is open to introduce ourselves to the neighborhood! It is our goal to be a contributing member of the proud, vibrant ER community. Sincerely, Julian Big Mama's Social Media Manager P.S. As to watching games at a local Eagle Rock lounge, what about the Coffee Table Lounge right next to the CT Bistro? You should try it!
Joanne Turner February 20, 2013 at 04:36 pm
Oh, by the way, my family has ordered Big Mama's twice for delivery. We used to order Two Guys in Glendale, but we're all pleased with BMPP and would much rather order locally. The menu's a bit daunting, but once you find what you like, it's a reliable, delivered meal. I really like the roasted vegetable salad and the vegetarian pizza.
John February 22, 2013 at 12:43 am
Hate to be a voice of dissension, but my wife and I stopped in this place about a month ago and had a terrible dining experience. They left us waiting for our eat in order for an hour. After about 45 minutes someone finally came by and asked us what we had ordered. I sat in there dumbfounded as several people got their orders or takeouts. At the one hour mark I couldn't take it anymore. We got up and I asked them to give me my money back on my credit card. Even that the guy helping didn't seem to know how to do. They lost my service. I'll never go in this place again. Sorry but we have other cool lounges around ER/HP like the York or Maximillianos. I was truly disappointed in this joint.
