Hair today, gone tomorrow. It’s hard to resist a pun like that when a hair salon that paints the words “Hair Today” on its front awning abruptly disappears.
That was the case with American Beauty Salon, a large and well-furnished place that recently closed shop. Located at 4516 Eagle Rock Blvd., one of the six-lane street’s busiest stretches near the Avenue 45 intersection, the salon is being replaced by a clothing store that’s hitting the ground running, with a grand opening today, Saturday.
Called Sol’s Boutique, the store is the brainchild of Iris Marisol Lopez and her two daughters—a fashion-loving family that ran a similar store, Iris Fashion, on Highland Park’s Monte Vista Street for eight years until 2007.
Sol’s specializes in trendy, affordable clothing for women. You can find everything here from clothes, purses and shoes to accessories such as scarves, belts, necklaces, bracelets, rings, beanies and fedoras.
“It’s simple, girly stuff,” explains Cindy Harris, one of Lopez’s two daughters. “Our goal is for customers to buy a lot of items for low prices.”
None of the “nicer dresses,” for example, are higher than $30, according to Harris. Blouses for work can be had for $14, “nicer purses” for $35, and no shoes or boots are higher than $50 (flats cost $14). Attractive scarves? Just $8 to $10.
Although Sol’s does have some factory seconds on its shelves, nothing in the store is used or recycled, says Harris. Brand names include Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe; there are jeans from Nordstrom.
The clothes and accessories are targeted at customers ranging from 16 years of age to their 30s. “They love our stuff,” says Harris, adding that she hopes to have many a sale at the store.
Sol’s will also offer a styling service whereby five or six outfits, including accessories and shoes, can be provided to customers attending or hosting events.
“This is something my mother has always loved,” says Harris.
