New York Boulevard Shop Featured in LA Times

Northeast L.A.'s design boom has again caught the eye of the L.A. Times.

Northeast Los Angeles' crafts and design boom has again caught the eye of the Los Angeles Times, with York Bouelvard's recently opened Shopclass being featured in Friday's online edition.

Shopclass--which debuted during NELAart's Second Saturday Gallery night with an exhibit of photographs by Dabito, curator of the Old Brand New Blog--is just the latest design-centric shop to open its doors in the last year-and-a-half on York Boulevard.

The Los Angele Times reports that owners Sally Breer, Jeff Garbs and Ellen LeCompte researched other neighborhoods, " but ultimately chose Highland Park for its 'community vibe.'"

The investments in Highland Park are great, whether it's a small shop, a house flipper or an art gallery. The ghetto murals and the diverse population add character to the neighborhood. And, although the neighbors throw out their old crap on the side of the road, eventually someone comes by an picks it up and recycles it. A lot of good recycling efforts going on in the neighborhood. And in fact, it is not ghetto culture or Latino culture that brings down the neighborhood, it is clearly the gang bangers and gang violence. I like to walk around the neighborhood -- until I see an old gang banger with his old lady and kids start to swear at a rival gang members walking down the street. I don't want to be caught in the cross fire with my kids.

Nimby pimp you keep me entertained, but creeper never mentioned mattresses, chicken or graffiti -- that was actually J. So apparently, HP Gringo can read. I'd like to join him on the peace walk -- but I am afraid that I might get shot. I'm trying to weigh the risks.

@neighbor they've been having this event for the past 5 years now, no one has ever been shot during it. you should come and definitely bring kids as the event is mostly for kids with plenty of activities at the park for them. With all that fear you have it must be terrible for you living in Los Angeles. Very recently in Echo Park right on Echo Park Avenue a white family was shot at by gangs while putting their child in the car. The father was hit with a bullet. Echo Park Ave has stores just like the one this article is about I guess no one is safe anywhere no matter how over priced the stores are. Scary.

Shopclass is a great addition to Highland Park. I found some oak flat files that I know were less expensive than garage sale prices. The store has some nice vintage items that are more difficult to find now. I shop at the new and established businesses as well as the perennial garage sales that offer all kinds of items. There is something for everyone.
