Whatever Happened to Colorado Boulevard’s ‘Spider Cow?’

The iconic bovine model atop Comics Vs Toys appears to have been the victim of a whimsical pot entrepreneur.

Over the years, one of the more eye-catching commercial signs on Colorado Boulevard was the inimitable “Spider Cow.” A colorful cross between humble bovine and Spiderman, the model seemed to smile from its perch on the roof of Comics Vs Toys.

If you noticed that Spider Cow is no longer there and have been wondering what happened to it, keep reading.

Turns out it’s been gone a couple of years—a testament to time’s rapid passage. I could swear it was there when journalist Nathan Solis wrote a terrific Patch article titled “The Origin Story of an Eagle Rock Comics Store,” a few weeks after Eagle Rock Patch launched in November 2010.

So the other day, I decided to drop in at Comics Vs Toys, located on 1613 Colorado Blvd., to ask about Spider Cow. Trevor Smith, a young and cheerful employee, told me that the cow initially belonged to Colorado Quality Pain Relief, a now-defunct medical marijuana dispensary next doors that also went by the name of Another World Chronic.

The owner of CQPR stumbled upon the cow in the store one day while cleaning it up, Smith told me, adding that he gave the cow to the two owners of Comics Vs Toys, Ace Aguilera and Tracy Morgan (Morgan now co-owns Taco Spot and is no longer associated with Comics Vs Toys), who painted the cow and installed it on the comics store’s roof.

Spider Cow survived L.A.’s terrible windstorms back in December 2011. Subsequently, however, the pot shop owner told Aguilera and Morgan that he wanted his cow back, Smith said, adding that he had no idea why the pot entrepreneur would make such a bizarre demand.

Comics Vs Toys’ owners reluctantly returned the Spider Cow. Somehow, the store isn’t quite as appealing as it used to be.

But there’s a possibility that the roof of Comics Vs Toys might be getting another Spider Cow. “We get asked about the cow so much that we’re thinking of putting one up again,” Smith said.
