Patch Blog: A Day in the Life of an Eagle Rock High Student

A peek into the life of a freshman student at Eagle Rock High School, nearly 15 weeks into the semester.

If you have ever wondered about the type of education students receive at , you can rest assured that they are in good hands, especially if they are in a Gifted, Honors, accelerated course, or enrichment program. Teachers in those areas are extremely capable of providing an amazing learning environment. Despite massive budget cuts, the staff has been very understanding and does their best to cope. And although some classes may be larger than others, there is no doubt that ERHS can handle it.

So, what are students learning now? Although it's not exactly common, many others do share something similar to my schedule:

On “green” days, I start out with English taught by Ms. Hood. Right now we are delving into the theme of biographical approaches in past Native American life. In Advanced Placement World History, taught by Ms. Lee, we are studying revolutions in Europe and the Americas during the 18th century and the 19th century. In theatre, with Mr. Copley, we are exploring the concept of teen rebellion and discontent in the 1940s and 1950s. And in Mandarin, with Mr. Yan, we are learning about food—fruits, vegetables, meals, desserts, meats and dairy.

On “grey” days, Mr. Yan teaches Math analysis—we are currently learning how to calculate the areas of regular triangles using trigonometric identities and formulas. In Biology, taught by Ms. Gallegos, we have just completed a unit, "The Rise of Life," and finished taking the exam. We are working on a major writing project responding to a chapter about cells. (The reading material is from "A Short History of Almost Everything" and provides a refreshing point of view on the development of the universe from its birth until now.)

And finally, on the girl's tennis team, led by Coach Jacobson, we have finished our season. (We no longer stay after school, but we still get to play and practice during 8th period.)

That just about sums up my schedule. But it's still just a small slice of what goes on here. There's much more to school than just classes. Clubs, sports, extracurricular activities, events, tests, learning, projects, fundraisers, homework—they all make up the frequently stressful life of a high school student.
