Blog: Crimes in Eagle Rock—Mostly During Lunch on Fridays

To conduct crime analysis for your neck of the woods in Eagle Rock, head over to CrimeMapping.com and explore.

If you were to ask your neighbors which aspects of living in Eagle Rock they value most, among the top five answers will undoubtedly be about how safe Eagle Rock is compared to other parts of Los Angeles (along with being family friendly, having great schools, great restaurants and local businesses, the arts etc.). Recently, I wanted to learn more about the crimes that are happening in and around Eagle Rock zip code of 90041.

To conduct the analysis, I used an online crime mapping tool from CrimeMapping.com. The website allows you to map crimes in and around a zip code for the past six months. For my search, I wanted to see all crimes that occurred within 1 mile radius of 90041 for the past six months (April 14 - October 11, 2012).

The search returned 85 crimes. (The results.) To my surprise, almost all of the crimes were related to some form of theft (18 cars, 8 bikes, properties etc.) with only 2 counts for assault.

While the crimes were distributed throughout the zip code, a good concentration of them occurs along Eagle Rock Boulevard and near the corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock (not shown).

Fridays had the highest number of crimes (17) compared to the rest of the week (with an average of 7 crimes per day.)

While this information is useful, CrimeMapping.com does not provide a summary about when crimes occur each day. So with the help of Excel, I was able to chart the time of the crimes (rounded to the nearest hour) and found the results to be quite fascinating. Crimes near me appear to occur most around lunch (1 p.m.), dinner (7 p.m.), and bedtime (10 p.m.)—not so much during the early hours between midnight and 8 a.m. There appears to be a lull at 4 p.m. during the day.

(Please note that CrimeMapping.com periodically update their database with events that occur in the past, so the crime count may fluctuate depending on when you download the data.)
