Update on Homeless Hate Crime

First I want to thank everyone for their support during such a hard time. I wanted to post an update about how the man who was assaulted is doing. First, he finally allowed medical treatment on Thursday and his burns, second and third degree, were treated and he is recovering. When i gave him the money people had donated through our website, $165, he was tearful. I printed out all the concerned comments and emails I have received and we read these together, this moved him.

He decided to use the money to access a local motel this weekend, rest, and recover and he has finally decided to accept housing assistance from us! This is a step in the right direction and something we have been encouraging during our two year relationship. I believe what happened to him nearly two weeks ago was the final push he needed and the event scared him so badly he is now willing to look at programs set in place to assist veterans.

I am hesitant to post further on Patch about this incident for feelings I will not write here. My intention with this post is to let everyone know this man is safe and recovering and that he is moved by the support most of the community has given him. As for the investigation please note we are doing everything we can to advocate for this man, everything, and as people begin to take this seriously as the hate crime that it was and as they should have when LAFD responded that night, the story will tell itself. Three men lit him on fire and one stood over him laughing as he burned, this is a hate crime. I need readers of these posts to know that this man has never lied to us, has never exhibited any level of psychosis, and his story hasn't changed. We are confident that when the the right (powerful) people step in to make people investigate this case, the truth will be known. Thank you.
