9 Fast Facts: Sexual Assault and Title IX

In the wake of a sexual assault scandal at Occidental College, the Oxy Sexual Assault Coalition distributes an infographic created by the National Women's Law Center.

One in five women—or more than 2 million—is sexually assaulted while in college. Sexual assault includes situations in which a person is incapable of consenting to sex because of alcohol or drugs. Colleges that receive federal funds are independently required to investigate complaints of sexual assault promptly, thoroughly and impartially, regardless of any reports that sexual assault victims might have made to police.

Those are three among "Nine Fast Facts About Sexual Assault and Title IX" contained in an infographic by the National Women's Law Center and distributed Monday by the Oxy Sexual Assault Coalition, an online activist and advocacy group that has accused Occidental College authorities of not doing enough about an alleged "sexual assault epidemic" on campus.

(The red background of the list doesn't make for the easiest reading, though, as several comments on the NWL's Facebook page pertinently point out.)

Last month, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights began investigating Occidental College for allegedly mishandling complaints from dozens of Oxy students that they were raped or sexually assaulted on campus.
