ERNC Member Rescues More Pooches Than He'd Bargained For on Way to Work

Matt Harrington finds two Chihuahua mixes, a pit bull, a pit-terrier mix and a "Pomeranian boy" downtown.

Like many Eagle Rockers, Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council member Matt Harrington often sees lost or stray dogs wandering around the neighborhood.

This past Monday morning, Harrington found a pack of five dogs loose in the Northeast L.A. neighborhood of Lincoln Heights—at Spring Street and 18th Avenue, near the Downey Recreation Center—while driving to work.

“I managed to get them all in my mini and took then to North Central Animal Shelter on Lacy Street,” Harrington told Eagle Rock Patch, adding: “None of them had collars, tags or microchips, but all were really lovely dogs who deserve good homes.”

One of the pooches was a “beautiful, gentle grey and white female pit bull, who had her head in my lap the entire car ride to the shelter,” Harrington said. Another of the dogs the ERNC member rescued was a “little black/grey male Chihuahua mix who seemed inseparable from her [the pit bull].” There was also a “happy little Pomeranian boy” and a second Chihuahua mix—tan, also male—“a little more on the reserved side,” according to Harrington.

Lastly, there was a “really nice, sweet-natured pit/terrier mix who let me pick him up to get him in the back of the car,” said Harrington.

If all goes well at the Lacy Street animal shelter, the pooches will be ready for adoption this coming Saturday, Harrington said, pointing out that anyone interested in adopting any of the dogs should contact the shelter:

City of Los Angeles North Central Animal Shelter, 3201 Lacy St., Los Angeles, 90031, (888) 452-7381.

Correction: The initial version of this article mistakenly identified downtown L.A. as the area where Matt Harrington found the five dogs. The correct location, as Eagle Rock resident and former ERNC member Robert Guevara points out in a comment below, is Lincoln Heights.
