• Volunteer to End Homelessness

Get to know your homeless neighbors: Volunteer May 31 to June 2

The 100,000 Homes Campaign is a national movement of more than 100 communities working together to find and house 100,000 vulnerable and chronically homeless individuals and families by July 2014.

100,000 Homes Northeast LA is a grassroots community effort in collaboration with the local nonprofit organization, Recycled Resources for the Homeless. Our goal is to house the most vulnerable and chronically homeless residents of Northeast LA, including the communities of Highland Park and Eagle Rock.

We need you to volunteer for NELA’s homeless “Registry Weekend” from May 31 to June 2.

Friday May 31: Evening Training
Saturday June 1: 6 a.m. – 9 a.m.
Sunday June 2: 6 a.m. – 9 a.m.

We will be conducting an in-depth survey of the homeless residents in the communities of Highland Park and Eagle Rock. There are many ways to volunteer for this important community event.

• 8th Annual Lummis Day Festival

Sunday, June 2, 10:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., Heritage Square Museum, 3800 Homer St.
Los Angeles, 90031.

Seven Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils have come together to support the 8th annual Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast Los Angeles. This celebration of Northeast L.A.'s cultural diversity, history and creativity, will take place Sunday June 2 at two historic landmark locations and runs from 10:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.  Admission to all events is free.

The main stages for Lummis Day’s performances will again be located at Heritage Square Museum (3800 Homer St.), where the best of home-grown Northeast L.A. music, dance, food and community resources will be presented on four stages amid the historic buildings preserved on the unique museum’s grounds.

The diverse styles and traditions of this year’s music (featuring 17 bands) include rock music from Boyle Heights and Japan, Cuban jazz, folk, mariachi, Americana, Gospel, indie rock, reggae and jazz. Dance groups will present modern dance, folkloric, American historic and flamenco traditions.  Some of the historic buildings at Heritage Square Museum will be available to festival-goers via docent-led tours.

As always, the two-part Festival’s opening morning event will take place at Lummis Home (200 East Ave. 43), where the day begins at 10:30 a.m. with readings by critically acclaimed poets. The Lummis Home site will also feature art exhibits, book sales and crafts.

The Festival’s art exhibit will continue at Lummis Home until 5pm while performances—music, dance, puppet theater—as well as community and family activities, shift to nearby Heritage Square Museum, beginning at noon. Visitors to Lummis Home can enjoy the interior of the century-old home, influenced by mission architecture and Pueblo Indian dwellings, and can stroll through the beautiful native plant gardens that surround the building.

• Colorado Boulevard Bike Lanes Proposal

It has been two months since Council District 14, in partnership with the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, The Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce and The Eagle Rock Association, hosted the Colorado Boulevard Bike Town Hall Meeting at Occidental College. Since then, the proposal for bike lanes on Colorado has been the topic of many conversations.

After listening to many comments and points of view, one of the biggest concerns of people from all perspectives is the safety of those who live, work and visit Eagle Rock. For this reason, CD 14 asked LADOT to address some of the specific safety and traffic flow concerns community members have suggested to improve Colorado Boulevard for all those who use it.

We do believe community input is critical and want to set up one more meeting to hear your thoughts and concerns on LADOT’s latest plan.

LADOT will present their findings with adjusted designs for your perusal at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock.

Your input is critical to this process and we invite you to view and comment on LADOT’s revised Colorado Boulevard Bike Lane proposal. LADOT and Councilmember Huizar will be present to answer any questions you have. If you need further information, please call the CD 14 Northeast office at (323) 254-5295.

WHAT: Colorado Boulevard Bike and Traffic Improvement Plan.

WHEN: 7 p.m., Monday, June 3.
WHERE: Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, 2225 Colorado Blvd.

• 4th Annual Concerts in the Park & Fireworks Show Sponsorship Opportunities

Councilmember Huizar and the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce are happy to announce that the 4th Annual Concerts in the Park & Fireworks Show will be held Sunday, June 30 at Eagle Rock Recreation Center. Last year, the event drew more than 7,000 community members and we expect this year’s event to be even bigger and better.

New this year, sponsorship opportunities will be available to Northeast LA businesses and organizations. If you would like to purchase advertising space in the event program, a banner at the event, and/or a booth at the event for your business, please contact Lauren Ballard in our office at (323) 254-5295 or lauren.ballard@lacity.org. Community groups who wish to have a booth (free of charge) should also contact Lauren.
