Oxy Celebrates 100 Years in Eagle Rock
A new set of banners line Colorado Boulevard, replacing older ones that celebrated Oxy's 125th anniversary.
They're hard to miss if you're walking or driving along Colorado Boulevard—attractive, tastefully decorated banners on lampposts that celebrate a century of Occidental College's presence in Eagle Rock.
The banners, which could well be a model for a similar project that the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council is undertaking to promote civic pride in the ER, went up this week and are meant to replace another set of banners that celebrated Oxy's 125th anniversary in Northeast L.A., according to Occidental College Director of Communications Jim Tranquada.
For those who might be unaware of Oxy's history, before the college moved to Eagle Rock 100 years ago, it was located in Highland Park—and before that, in Boyle Heights.
Another bit of trivia: Oxy is the second-oldest liberal arts college in Los Angeles, after Loyola Marymount University.
