Community Group Headed by Eagle Rock Resident Wins PepsiCo Adelante Award

The award recognizes El Centro del Pueblo's long-running community service.

El Centro del Pueblo, the Echo Park-based community organization that is one of the most respected family resources in Northeast LA, has won the 2012 PepsiCo Adelante Award.

The annual honor, bestowed on individuals or organizations connected with the National Council of La Raza in recognition of their community work, was awarded to El Centro del Pueblo this past Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Alma Awards ceremony.

The National Council of La Raza is the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization.

“Community Service, youth development and family engagement are all hallmarks of the Adelante Alma Award,” said Sandra Figueroa-Villa, an Eagle Rock resident who is the executive director of El Centro del Pueblo, which means "People's Center" in Spanish.

This past March, Figueroa-Villa was awarded the “Woman of the Year” title in LA County’s First District by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors member Gloria Molina. The award was in recognition of Figueroa-Villa’s work at El Centro del Pueblo, which is based in the First District of LA County and has been working with at-risk youth since 1974.

It would not have been possible to win the PepsiCo Adelante Award, Figueroa-Villa added, without the tireless work and backing of her staff, board members, various funding agencies and supporters.

The Alma Awards will be broadcast on Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. on the Spanish-language Telemundo channel and on 8 p.m. on NBC4.
