Celebrate a Car-Free Sunday Today

Attention, Eagle Rockers—today is Sunday but it's no ordinary Sunday. It happens to be the third Sunday in two years when 10 miles of roads across parts of East L.A. and Downtown will become absolutely free of motor vehicles.

From 10 a.m. through 3 p.m., certain streets not too far from Eagle Rock will be open exclusively to cyclists, runners, skaters and walkers—anyone who prefers human locomotion to the vehicular variety.

Cic-What?

In case you haven’t heard, this is the popular event that attracts thousands of cyclists who, for a change, have the run of the road. Called CicLAvia, it’s L.A.'s version of Ciclovía—Spanish for “bike path”—the weekly street closure in Bogotá, Colombia, that has become a byword for car-free streets.

Stretching from Boyle Heights to Downtown and MacArthur Park to East Hollywood, CicLAvia invites people not only to shun cars, but also "to rediscover the roadways and neighborhoods that too often go unnoticed in a car,” according to the organization’s website.

Street Closures

Among the key streets that will closed to vehicular traffic will be First Street and Main Street near Los Angeles City Hall. New Hampshire, Seventh Street and Spring Street, between Hollywood and the Civic Center, will also be free of cars. See the attached map for further details.

So take this opportunity to rediscover parts of L.A. from your bicycle perch or as a pedestrian—without the otherwise ever-present fear of getting hit by a car or being intimidated by traffic.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, City Controller Wendy Greuel and Councilmembers and Tom LaBonge will also celebrate this Sunday’s CicLAvia, which is partially funded by the City of L.A. and is part of the mayor's plan to introduce more pedal power on our car-jammed streets.
