Rosh Hashanah to Usher in Year 5773 in the Jewish Calendar Sunday

The two-day celebration is a time for introspection leading to Yom Kippur on Sept. 25.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year revered as the Day of Judgment when each person’s fate is inscribed in the Book of Life, begins Sunday evening, Sept. 16, with a two-day ceremony that will usher in the year 5773 in the Jewish calendar.

Marking the first of the High Holy Days—or High Holidays traditionally known as Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe)—Rosh Hashanah culminates 10 days later in Yom Kippur.

Because it is regarded as the holiest period in the Jewish calendar, Rosh Hashanah is a time for introspection. Jews are called upon to observe 10 days of penitence that end in Yom Kippur.
