Northeast Los Angeles Newspapers project unveiled

With the support of local organizations, Occidental College's Special Collections and Archives dept hosted community historical leaders at a reception and short program to commemorate  the pilot stage of the Northeast los Angeles (NELA) Newspapers Project. The venture will allow interested parties to explore the local newspapers that provided the Northeast area's news for nearly century online and and digitally at the library at Oxy.  Many of the  old newspapers are also available for viewing  in print at an off campus facility.
Among the organizations that have contributed to the completion of the historic project are: The ER Valley Historical Society; Highland Park Heritage Trust and a variety of individuals and students. Among the newspapers involved in the process are: South Pasadena Journal; Eagle Rock Sentinel; Highland Park News Herald and Journal; El Sereno Star; Northeast Star Review; Lincoln Heights Bulletin News;Belverdere Citizen and Eastside Journal (all part of the original Northeast Newspapers chain published  by notable Oxy Alumnus, Oran Asa). Other notable papers  from the past are: Eagle Rock Advertiser; Highland park post Dispatch and the Occidental (still being published).
 When the project is completed , the historic editions of these papers will be available in print, online and and digitally allowing for those wishing to research past local events to research a treasure trove of   local historical events that shaped the communities rich heritage
