Patch Blog: Eagle Rock Music Festival Sampler (Video)

A sample of the eclectic musical performances that make the Eagle Rock Music Festival one of a kind.

Besides the fact that the Eagle Rock Music Festival is a true neighborhood showcase that benefits local restaurants and is walking distance from my house, what I really love about this annual celebration is the opportunity to discover new music.

And once again, the innovative music and arts programming from the , which enlivens our neighborhood all year was on full display on October 1 across the many stages blanketing Colorado Boulevard.

The sheer diversity of musical offerings on stages, parking lots and motel balconies can overwhelm, so I have learned to keep an open mind and enjoy the artists I chance upon.

My short 1-1/2 minute video is just a quick sampling of the typically eclectic array of bands I happened to catch in a two-hour period.

1. Little Faith at the courtyard. This was one of the many unofficial fringe events produced by local businesses. The soulful vocalist is Nadia Duggin. (www.littlefaithmusic.com)

2. Allah Las at the Emerging Stage. I loved their sound. (http://allah-las.com)

3. Bonne Musique Zydeco at the second-floor balcony of the . Nice to welcome back this Los Angeles-based band specializing in the Creole music of Southwest Louisiana and East Texas. (http://bonnemusiquezydeco.com/home.html)

4. Cambalache on the Rantz Stage. Having enjoyed La Santa Cecilia last year, I was looking forward to a new discovery this year and Cambalache, a tradicional son jarocho ensemble founded and led by Cesar Castro, did not disappoint. (http://jarochelo.com/cambalache/)

5. Biggest Crush at the Dublab Future Stage. Biggest Crush is the production team of record producer Sunny Levine and DJ Turquoise Wisdom (Zach Cowie). (http://biggestcrush.net).

6. A kid-friendly drum circle on the sidewalk outside .

7. El-Haru Kuroi at the Dublab Future Stage. I loved this East L.A. trio playing a jazzy mix of traditional Mexican folk songs fused with South American and African melodies and rock. (http://www.myspace.com/harukuroi).

8. The Fuxedos rocking the Razorcake/Zocaloc Stage at the American Legion Hall. Highland Park publication Razorcake and NELA arts nonprofit Zocaloc teamed up to present a unique punk rock experience, and The Fuxedos certainly delivered. This band rocks and the lead singer is fantastic. (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Fuxedos/39995055827).

Congratulations to the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock and our City for another excellent day of great music!
