Police said Diego Frias of Los Angeles was driving a 2006 Kia Sorrento southbound on Verdugo and it collided with a 2010 Honda Accord driven by 64- year-old Raquel Ormeo, also of Los Angeles. It was unclear in which direction Ormeo was traveling.

The impact caused the Kia to overturn and come to rest against a tree, Bailey said.

Frias was rushed to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries, Bailey said.

Ormeo suffered fractures to her ribs and back and was also taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where she was in a stable condition, Bailey said.

A 28-year-old woman passenger in the Kia was taken to the same hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Bailey said.

Investigators won't know if alcohol or drugs played a role until the coroner's office completes toxicology reports, Bailey said.

Anyone with information about the collision was urged to contact the LAPD's Central Traffic Division at (213) 972-1853.
