At Least 6 Oxy Students May Have Suffered Alcohol Poisoning

Paramedics respond to more than a half-dozen calls at the school early Sunday.

By City News Service

Paramedics were called to Occidental College in Eagle Rock early Sunday morning when at least a half-dozen students may have suffered alcohol poisoning after drinking too much during an on-campus dance, authorities said.

The 911 calls started coming in at 1:54 a.m., said Sgt. Nathan Hooper of the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast station.

It began with two people at the college at 1600 Campus Rd., in Eagle Rock, who reportedly were suffering from alcohol poisoning, Hooper said. A Northeast station LAPD officer then learned of a third apparent alcohol poisoning, he added.

"There was a dance on campus and a small number of students exercised bad judgement,'' Occidental Director of Communications Jim Tranquada told City News Service.

Tranquada said there were about 1,000 students at the dance and estimated the number of stricken students at "about a half-dozen.'' He was not sure if all of them were transported to hospitals.
