LAFD Battling Fire at Occidental College

With winds gusting up to 80 mph, a two-acre area covered with grass is on fire at Oxy but nobody has been injured and the LAPD is helping with evacuations.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is battling a fire in a two-acre area covered with grass amid strong Santa Ana winds at —one of about 400 fire-related incidents citywide on Wednesday night in a period of about 90 minutes.

“We have air and ground resources out there,” said LAFD spokesman Brian Humphreys, adding that the LAPD evacuated people from the area around the blaze before firefighters arrived at 11:55 p.m. on the 1900 block of Campus Road.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, Humphreys said. The LAFD's resources have been stretched thin because of the unusually high number of fires around the city, he added.

“We’re dispatching a call every 12 seconds,” Humphreys said. “We’re getting hammered.”

Humphreys said he didn’t have the time to even count how many fire engines responded to the fire at Oxy. "We're 110 percent focused on fighting the fire," he said.
