Update: Atwater Lockdown Completed, No Suspect Apprehended

Officers, accompanied by police dogs, locked down an area just east of the entrance to the 2 Freeway on Fletcher. They were searching for a man suspected of being armed with a handgun.

Later: Police announced the completion of the perimeter just after 5:20 p.m. on Facebook and Twitter.  A preliminary report on the Northeast Facebook page said officers were doing a compliance check at a probationer's residence when a man, not the parolee, grabbed a handgun from his waistband and began running, prompting the lockdown.  The Northeast Facebook page says the suspect was not apprehended but another man was detained and released.

Meantime, at approximately 5:30 p.m. the Northeast police scanner reported an attempted suicide at 2760 Fletcher Dr., a location within the area that had been locked down.  That individual is now being held for observation.

Earlier: Los Angeles Police Department officers closed off a street in Atwater Village Tuesday, about a quarter mile from the LAPD Northeast Community Station on San Fernando Road, to search for a man suspected to be armed with a handgun.

The officers barricaded the intersection of La Clede Avenue and Fletcher Drive at around 2:30 p.m. as a police helicopter hovered overhead and small crowds of people gathered nearby.

An officer at the scene, Gabriel Nily, said he and his colleagues were looking for an armed suspect. Nily added that the suspect had not fired any shots and that it wasn't clear if he is a gang member, as the Northeast Area LAPD implied in a 2:30 p.m. Twitter message that read: “LAPD perimeter in Atwater for gang member with gun, near Fletcher & Perlita. Air Unit overhead, K9 en route. Stay away.”

On Nov. 18, a gang member wanted on felony charges was arrested on Perlita Avenue, near La Clede, after he fled from an LAPD officer who recognized him.

Officers, along with police dogs, were still searching for the suspect as of 4:40 p.m., according to a police service representative who answered the phone at the LAPD Northeast station and identified herself only as Sotello.

The Northeast Area LAPD Facebook page announced, meanwhile, that the police station's Parole Compliance Unit is "looking for a suspect who fled on foot in the Atwater Village area."

No further details were immediately available.
