City Council Scraps Redevelopment Agency

Facing a $109-million bill for continued redevelopment, the Council votes to ditch CRA/LA, which helped revitalize large parts of the city.

Two weeks after Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa conceded that the City of Los Angeles has no choice but to accept the California Supreme Court’s decision to dissolve as many as 400 community redevelopment agencies, the City Council has voted that it cannot afford the financial burden of sustaining the agency and its 192 employees in Los Angeles.

The City Council’s 9-3 vote on Wednesday came a day after Chief Administrative Officer Miguel Santana cautioned that Los Angeles would face a $109-million bill if it continues redevelopment activities, which form a decades-long chapter in the life of CRA/LA, the agency that helped revitalize such key areas of the city as downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The City Council’s decision—which doesn't affect Eagle Rock directly because there are currently no CRA projects in the neighborhood—will be enforced on Feb. 1, unless the California legislature postpones its law that dissolves CRAs across the state, reports the Times.
