Huizar to Discuss Community Issues at Neighborhood Council Meeting Tuesday

Council member Josè Huizar will give a presentation about community and city issues at the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council's meeting at 7 p.m.

Council member Josè Huizar will address some key community issues Tuesday evening at the monthly board meeting of the .

All concerned community members and stakeholders are invited to attend this public event, which will begin at 7 p.m. at Eagle Rock City Hall (not the usual venue at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock).

There are three issues Huizar is likely to address in his presentation. The first is the presence in Eagle Rock of as many as 15 medical marijuana dispensaries, which are potential targets of a federal crackdown that began across California last month. The second issue revolves around massage parlors, the majority of which are seen by authorities and residents alike as places known more for illicit sexual activities than therapeutic rubdowns.

And finally, Huizar will likely focus on the issue of public safety in , a magnet for graffiti taggers and notorious in the public eye for crimes ranging from drug use and pedaling to physical assaults.

The most recent incident at the Yosemite Recreation Center—a teenager’s alleged assault with a knife on a young woman on October 24—has generated some anxious and angry comments from our readers, including this one from longtime Eagle Rock resident and ex-LAUSD teacher Jan Freed on Tuesday morning:

"Will you please tell me what the heck we are paying large salaries to police for, when we have this ongoing situation at Yosemite park? Surely, a cop posted there on active patrol, before or after school, would cool these dudes off. And during school, when kids are ditching, a random patrol, and occasional arrests, would get the word out that the park is not a “safe” place—for criminals! Do we really need council meetings and other “slow-walking” measures when the solution is obvious?"

Robert Guevara, co-chair for ERNC’s Outreach and Event Planning Committee, wants readers to know that he would be happy to collect their questions for Huizar ahead of today’s meeting and present them to the Council member during a likely Q&A session.

But Guevara asks that the questions revolve around “something direct and relevant to the CM's job, and that demonstrates what your concerns are about the city or the Council Member’s representation.”

An overview of some of Huizar's City Council responsibilities can be found at the end of this article.

Feel free to post your questions in the Comments section below—and we will get them to the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council in time for the 7 p.m. event.
