Huizar’s 3-Year-Old Daughter Diagnosed With Cancer

The councilmember asks for "everybody's prayers for his little girl."

Councilmember José Huizar’s youngest daughter was recently diagnosed with leukemia, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Huizar’s daughter, Aviana, is the youngest of his four children and is being treated at Children’s Hospital, according to the Times.

Huizar confirmed Aviana’s illness following queries about his failure to attend two City Council meetings last week, particularly an important Sept. 23 discussion about a high-rise building project proposed downtown on Grand Avenue, the Times said.

Huizar his wife Richelle were busy meeting with Children's Hospital doctors regarding a treatment plan for their stricken daughter, the newspaper quoted the councilmember’s communications director Rick Coca as saying.

Huizar has changed the cover photo on his Facebook page to a snapshot of Aviana, a sign, if one were needed, of his emotional upheaval in the aftermath of Aviana’s cancer diagnosis.
