Lopez Praises Obama for ‘Casting Aside Fear’ and Supporting Gay Marriage

The openly gay aspirant to the California Assembly says the president has officially shown his ‘full support for the full humanity’ of thousands of LGBT people in the 51st Assembly District.

President Obama’s historic endorsement Wednesday of gay marriage—a first by any U.S. president—has been hailed as a courageous “American value” by Luis Lopez, one of the four frontrunners in the race for California’s 51st Assembly District elections.

Lopez, who is openly gay and lives in Eagle Rock, participated in an April 25 ‘'Meet the Candidates” forum at the Center for the Arts. He e-mailed Patch the following message in response to Obama’s support for same-sex couples:

“I am immensely proud of our President today for making official his support for marriage equality. Casting aside fear and standing clearly on principle, President Obama has stated his full support for the full humanity of me and thousands of LGBT people in my district. He has honored the bonds, sacrifices, and commitments by millions of same-sex couples across our state and our nation, including the millions who are raising children, caring for relatives, and including veterans or service members.

"Marriage equality and the recognition and support of our diverse families should not be a question of liberals and conservatives. It's not an issue of Democrats or Republicans. It is an American value that has deep significance for my family and the communities of Northeast and East L.A.

"The president has shown that political progress follows personal exposure, professional collaboration, and prolonged conversation. This has been true in my own family, in our community, and across California. The President's announcement gives us hope that these important interactions, along with committed political leadership, can overcome division and pave the way for full equality in our country and here at home in California.”

The Los Angeles Times described Obama’s backing of gay marriage as a “risky stand” that drew “praise and cash” from supporters. Millions of them had been waiting for the president to end his nearly year-and-a-half-long equivocation on the matter and make a clear public declaration that he does not oppose same-sex marriage on religious grounds, as he had reportedly stated during his presidential campaign. Nice try at getting some votes. This may backfire.

What do you mean Susan?

I did not know he was gay. Given that there's not a whole lot of difference between the candidates, I'll put that down as a "plus" in his column.
Bob G May 10, 2012 at 02:28 pm
As compared to several politicians who have worked against gay rights - until they were exposed as being gay, Luis has always been true to who he is and the pursuit of equality. Kudos to Luis and kudos to our president!

So, two weeks after the New York Times threatens to vett Obama and dig into his record and background (something they've never done) if he doesn't act on their pet issue, and two days before a deadline set by group of gay campaign bundlers to deny 20% of Obama's re-election funding on the same issue, he agrees to their demands and gets $1 million in contributions within 90 minutes from people with 100% disposable income.
Yep, lotta guts there. Amazing how manipulated people can be. Next up, benefits and social approval for others who deny the obvious functions of their bodies because they enjoy slamming their heads against the wall and cutting themselves. Give it a few years of media saturation, TV programming casting it in the "appropriate" light. I'm sure people would come around and start to think, "By George, we should be subsidizing that after all". A free-fall of decadency with no bottom.

A.T., I used to work in a psychiatric hospital, and there were people there who would slam their heads into walls and cut themselves, but they weren't gay. Your analogy is bizarre.

Mj: Any witnesses to this incident will probably be key to your attempts to prove your son is notRead More lying. You might want to consider speaking to the parents of the student witnesses to try to ensure that the students will come forward and testify if necessary. If the parents can write—or sign—letters supporting your son's version of events, all the better. Get the letters notarized and send them to the concerned authorities, including at LAUSD and LAPD.

Maybe they're moving to the space next door to the Comic Book shop. I'd say that there is a 50/50Read More chance that place becomes a massage parlor. Now that the bike lanes are decided, we need to come together to get these "rub and tug" joints closed.

I'm thinking that this may have something to do with it - from the "Grand Theft Auto"Read More story posted today: "In addition, the vice unit of the LAPD Northeast Community Station arrested four women for alleged prostitution during recent investigations of 10 massage parlors in Eagle Rock, Preciado said. Two others were arrested for running massage parlors without a state massage therapy license, Preciado said, adding that the vice unit has not released the addresses where the 10 massage parlors are located.
