As the Aug. 15 target approaches for the California Citizens Redistricting Commission to finalize the new electoral boundaries of Northeast L.A., the race to fill in State Assembly seats occupied by is intensifying—on Tuesday morning, for example, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa reportedly endorsed Torie Osborn, his former senior advisor, for the State Assembly.

In what is expected to be Eagle Rock’s Assembly backyard stretching into East L.A., at least three political aspirants are in a race to raise funds in their run for the 45th California Assembly District seat scheduled to be vacated by Boyle Heights native Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) next year, according to Mayor Sam’s Sister City blogger Scott Johnson.

As he tells it, the three aspirants to East L.A.’s political heartland, which includes Lincoln Heights, are Jimmy Gomez, political director United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals—last seen at the 13th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival official kick-off at the Center for the Arts on Aug. 4—who’s leading the race with $185,906 in cash in hand; Latino gay activist Luis Lopez ($103,443); and Arturo Chavez, Cedillo’s Lincoln Heights-based district office director ($70,009).
