‘Fast Food Nation’ Author to Talk About Poverty, Immigration

The idea that America is a fast-food nation dates back at least to 1993, when sociologist George Ritzer’s influential book, “The McDonaldization of Society,” was published. Over the decades, however, no writer has arguably done more to focus popular attention on the issue of fast food than Eric Schlosser, author of the bestselling 2001 book, “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.”

On Thursday, November 17, Schlosser will give a talk at in which he will discuss how the nation’s food system, including the fast food industry, affects such issues as poverty and immigration.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled at 6 p.m. in Occidental College's Thorne Hall. Click here for further details.

A correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, Schlosser co-produced the Emmy Award-winning 2008 documentary, "Food, Inc.,” which takes a critical look at corporate farming in the U.S. as not only inhumane but also environmentally and economically unviable in the long run. He is currently working on a book about the nation’s prison system.
