Girls Soccer: Eagle Rock Ends Season with Dominating Win Over Franklin

Eagles finish regular season on high note; playoffs begin next week.

The Eagle Rock girls soccer team has been known to score in bunches against some of its Northern League opponents this season, and Thursday was no different. The Eagles got goals from five different players on route to an 8-0 beat down of Franklin.

“We came out to win,” Eagle Rock coach Jose Aguilar said. “We played really well today. I told the girls once it gets past 4-0 to slow down, but they were really hungry today, probably because it was the final game of the season.”

It didn’t take long for the Eagles to establish dominance. Just five minutes into the game, junior Gina Gonzalez floated a shot perfectly over the Franklin keeper to give her team a 1-0 lead. It would be a sign of things to come for Gonzalez.

Just 10 minutes later, junior Katrina Levitsky got into the action, hitting a low line shot that slid past the keeper for a 2-0 lead. Gonzalez soon notched her second goal on a put back that was started by a great individual effort by senior co-captain Vanessa Capra.

“Gina normally doesn’t play forward, but we had to move her up today because of injuries and sickness on the team,” Aguilar said. “I thought she played great; she moved very well, and she has a knack for scoring goals.”

It seemed as though the only thing that could slow down the Eagles was the halftime whistle, yet Gonzalez picked up right where she left off in the second half.

After a perfect cross by Aurora Trejo, Gonzalez was all alone on the back post, and put in an easy header to complete her hat trick and give her team a 4-0 lead.

Shortly after, senior Amanda Fetter put in one of her two goals on the game. Right after the fifth goal, Aguilar emptied his bench in an attempt to slow down the onslaught, but his girls were having none of it.

Fetter scored her second goal minutes later after picking off a bad goal kick. With the team up 6-0, it only seemed fitting that the two senior captains get in on the scoring.

After missing countless scoring chances throughout the game, Capra finally put one through on what was probably her toughest shot of the game. Capra sailed the ball over the goalie from the side of the box, converting on what looked to be an impossible angle.

For the eighth and final goal, senior defender and co-captain Lauren Jorgenson scored on a free kick from outside the box.

“Those two girls are my keys. Lauren protects the goal while Vanessa controls the transitions in the midfield. It’s going to be really tough to lose them next year. They are very valuable,” Aguilar said.

The 8-0 win locked up second place for Eagle Rock in the Northern League, and the team now has its eyes set on the playoffs.

Aguilar has one simple goal for the postseason.

“All I want is to be able to put my full team out there,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve been able to put out my top 11 all year because of injuries and illness. If we have our best out there, then I know we won’t leave anything out there.”
